I may have made a discovery. I have two Vista laptops, one (Toshiba) with a built-in FireWire port and one (Fujitsu) without.
I was unsuccessful in getting any CardBus IEEE 1394 cards to work in the Fujitsu without built-in FireWire, although some (but not all) of them worked in the Toshiba. Both had Vista SP1 applied via Windows Update, but I discovered that the driver dates were different (the Fujitsu had older drivers). I restored the Fujitsu to a point before the SP1 update, and applied the SP1 update using the full SP1 downloaded updater. Problem solved! Latest update has broken steam-game overlay access : steam for mac mac.

Driver dates now match. It appears that, at least in this case, the Windows update skipped updating the 1394 drivers because there was no native device?? Note that I still find that some CardBus FireWire cards that do NOT work, but that's probably the nature of the beast.
