Marc, A very big congratulations on keeping up the erging for 20 years! Also congratulations on the upcoming 15 Mm mark, that is a long way! (Don't forget to get you free rowing shorts award.) I think it is quite an accomplishment to keep up with erging for such a long time. There are some people who have extraordinary lifetime distances. Some people have more time, energy, mental strength, etc. Than most, for example David (Roadrunner) Hislop and Dwayne (Speedy) Adams.
Good luck with continued erging and meterstones.David.

Given that the only serious machine I am aware of is the Concept 2 but it of cause comes at a cost.
The cost being £1200 more or less for the new E version. I know I could buy one on Ebay but you are still talking of £900 for a second hand one. Now to my question to you is, can anyone recommend a good alternative to the Concept 2. I realise I may have to pay a significant amount of money and am willing to do that but nothing like the cost of the Concept 2.
All advice would be welcome White Noise Joined: 25 Jun 2006 Posts: 6788 Location: Perth, WA Posted: Thu Oct 19, 2006 4:26 pm Post subject: as a ex rower i have to say a C2 rower is the way to go what ever you do. If you are worried about the cost go for a second hand model C (£500-£600), i got mine for £300 but i was very lucky (needed £20 worth of parts). They should be going down in price at the moment as a model E has just come out. They are robust as hell and parts are easy to get and maintainane is very easy, all DIY jobs. Take a look here and see what you can find, more trustworthy than ebay!

It's designed specifically for gyms - slightly different legs / higher seating position / 'fixed' position monitor.
All Concept2 racing events will continue to be done on the Model D. With the Model E, as far as I can see you just have further to fall when you are knackered!
2) You don't need to pay £1200. Join the BTA if you are not a member, and you can buy the Model D with the latest PM4 monitor (as is on the E) for around £960. It's one of the BTA Member benefits. Buy online and you get the floor mat thrown in too. Alternatively, go the the National Champs next month and buy one of the machines there (total use, 1 day) for £899 IIRC.

3) Bear in mind the staggering residual values of Concept2 machines - if only cars & bikes could manage the same! Having done a little indoor rowing, I wouldn't even consider another machine. It's also the machine used at any of the 'rowathlon' row-bike-run events. That's my view anyway! But as a suggestion, don't really know what your plans are but perhaps it would be cheaper just to join a gym for a few months if you're only planning to use it over the winter? I accept that this might not be practical for your cicumstances. 'It is our choices Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.'

It would actually be cheaper to buy it new (with BTA discount, or form BIRC), use it for the winter, and then sell it. Check out eBay now - several Model D's are going to reach £800, and that's with the (now older) PM3 monitor. If you get the PM4 monitor, you are virtually guaranteed to get almost all of your money back! They've even helped me to half convince the wife that it would be a good investment.
